Christine Moore, a surgical trauma nurse nearing burn out, returns to New Jersey and to her long ago job. Believing that she has finally gotten over a bad relationship with one of the staff doctors, she braves running into him again. After the fateful encounter, Christine decides to go out for a drink and runs into Joe. Joe is only there to help her understand how to best live her life. For Christine, there are only 6 commandments and she seems to be a very quick learner.

Very inspirational, not in a religious way that the title might imply. Everyone needs someone who believes in them and their right to be happy and content with their life. The life lessons in this book can be applied to anyone while the ideas, concepts and hopes can be a part of everyone. Joe gives another option for believing in God. This book encourages and enlightens without preaching with simple and light humor. This is a small book, a very quick and easy read with long lasting effects to anyone who takes it to heart.
For some, the definition of 5 star rating is if you would re-read a book...... I re-read this book a lot and it never seems to loose the inspiration I enjoy from it so much.

re-read dates are: 7/26/07, 8/23/08, 7/3/09, 7/2/10, 8/8/11, 12/27/21, 3/15/22

God has a mullet?!

This is a contender for the worst book I've ever read. Luckily it's also short! And entertaining, but not at all in the way it was intended.

Yikes.

Recommended by someone that doesn't know me at all. There is a point, but there was a little too much about the 'gorgeous' God-guy (I hate anything remotely evocative of a Harlequin romance) and a silly way of pointing out how the average woman's vanity can get in her way. Just scrape off all the makeup, get rid of the stilettos, let God shine through and you'll attract the man of your dreams. Yeah, yeah, I know, it's an inside job. blah blah blah Recommended by someone that doesn't know me at all. This little book has given me more joy and hope than any book (other than the Bible) I have ever read. I try to read it every couple of years, and to loan it out to my friends when I can --its perfect to finish during most airplane flights-- and I get something new from it each time. It is an old friend at this point and its time to reread it once again...I sure wish that Ms. Brady would give writing one more try :)

It was okay. I had a hard time getting past the premise of the book, that "God" is making the rounds on his Harley, planning to spend time with each of us to give us our own personalized commandments (instead of all us us blindly following the Big Ten). But even the pearls were just reminders. Nothing new here, and the story line is right on the line between charming and creepy. Really. ...more

Recommends it for: anyone needing a spiritual revival
Every time I get disheartened, sad, depressed, I pull out this book. Cheesy though it may be, it revives my spirit, gives me hope.

Like Joseph Addison's 18th-century work, "The Vision of Mirzah," this is definitely didactic literature intended to teach ideas, with a very plain storyline: human meets supernatural being, who then spouts philosophical precepts accredited by his supernatural status. (Fortunately, though, Brady's style is much more winsome than Addison's ponderous Neoclassical prose.) Comparison/contrast also suggests itself with The Shack, which I reviewed here on Goodreads earlier; both are written to state the author's religious views in terms palatable to secular-minded readers. But where the latter book is written from the standpoint of evangelical Christianity, this one is based on liberal theism with some flavoring of process theology and Eastern religion, which distinctly affects the result. Where The Shack sees sin as the basic human problem, and the remedy as radical moral reorientation through faith in God's saving work in Christ, here the problem is envisioned as poor attitudes, and the offered solution is pulling yourself up to mental health by the shoelaces through acceptance of pop psychology bromides. Of course, sin is basically attitudinal. But there are significant differences in the two approaches.

Some of Brady's advice is unexceptionable common sense. But her basic starting-point is self; one of her six commandments (designed to replace the Biblical ten) is "Take care of yourself, first and foremost." It isn't hard to recognize that "self-help," approached this way by people without the radical moral re-orientation alluded to above, easily degenerates into another form of navel-gazing selfishness.

I think books have time. If you read them at the time they are meant for, they leave a lasting impression on you. If you read them any other time you are bound to be unimpressed.

It's an easy to read, fun book. And by all means you should read it. But don't expect such easy solutions to come your way, because in life, I have learnt, every modicum of peace is hard earned.

Before I started reading this book, I thought I would be too embarrassed to place this book on my list, I was right. It started out bad and just got worse. The writing was poor, the theology was terrible and it was much too predictable. I was happy when I finished it. (In case I wonder later, I read it because a friend asked me to!)

I read this book many years ago. My life paralleled Christine. To much work, to much debt and to much ego. After reading this little story I made some serious changes in my life as well.
I recommend this to any women any age. That doesn't like herself and her life. God bless

I don't even know where to start with this. The writing style, the topic, the insensitive way the topic is handled or the entitled message it is presumably trying to make. It doesn't work on any level. In fact, let's just leave it at that and be charitable.

The main character Christine Moore found her self moving to the Jersey Shore at thirty seven years old. She was unhappy with her career and really unhappy with her love life. She walks into a bar after a bad day at work she orders two drinks and meets a man that changes her life. He was handsome and drove a Harley. I liked this book I found myself learning from Christine. She learns how to let go and really live and love her self. I think the huge lesson for me was enjoying where you are at right now and not in a few months days or years. I wrote this quote from the book in my journal last night. "Live in the moment. For each one is precious and not to be squandered ''. In life you find yourself ( at least I have) so busy achieving your goals that you miss the every day free and beautiful things I will look more at each day for the sights and sounds that are gifts that I have previously missed. This book is a good book and is a really quick read at only one hundred and forty seven pages. I would recommend this to every girl that has set by a phone and waited for that call, or every person so focused on working a lot never satisfied with what they have. It was a fun read as well. I read it in one day. I give this book three and a half stars. I rate books I read on a scale of one to five with five being the best. This book is was published in 1995 so if you are thrifty like me look for at garage sales, thrift stores or even second hand book stores.

The main characters are not really endearing but this peace of work contains good, clear and very helpful messages that could help someone who's interested in reaching a personal self-improvement, deeply look into our actions, habits, attitudes or simply the way we "receive" what life gives us in every single minute of every single day. It can help you to change the perspective of your our own life, like it says: "LIVE every moment of your life, because they are all beautiful and you shouldn't wast them." or "When you truly know who and what you are, with strengths and weaknesses, then you wont have to spend more time and energy trying to be different (...) accept your defects and deepen on your virtues, and love all what you are".
Its a book about happiness and love, but not romantic-love but GENUINE LOVE. Love yourself, love what you have having nothing and start forgetting "vital-now-a-days-things like your clothes, the mirror, a perfume, a bunch of food, alcohol or just the fact that we live caring too much on what people think and we are constantly trying to change ourselves to feel more "accepted".

After reading this yesterday all I wanted to do was purge old stuff out of my closets and live with less stuff (and it is still a work in progress today). It is a charming and hopeful book and a nice gift for any woman who has ever had her heart stomped on and has lost faith in herself or God.

Through their friendship she figures out how to get the house she wants, restart her career, and begin looking for love. When things come together for her her friend disappears. She's left wondering if her friend was an angel . . or better yet . . . God.

It was the right book for that time, so if you're ever in a dark spot this is a nice book to get you going again.
